  37.   Some of you may remember that I recently sold my GUS through
  38. this mail group. That's right, I'm the guy with carpal tunnel
  39. syndrome who sold his PC to his sister. I have something that one
  40. of you may be interested in. I included all my software when I
  41. sold my PC, except for Band-in-a-Box Professional, version5.  I
  42. did test it with the GUS and it worked fine. Here's some blurbs

  117. left-grnd-grnd-right, but how is this input controlled/mixed?  Is it totally
  118. seperate from the line in, mic in?  Is there any software that even supports

  164. I've seen references to people using the GUS with WinJammer.  I pulled
  165. 2.1 off a local BBS, but can't seem to get it do anything with the
  166. GUS.  I've tried configuring the output port as the MIDI mapper and
  167. the direct GUS OUTPUT port to no avail.

  186. dont know much.  I do need some help hthough.  My GUS card has been working
  187. fine, until recently.  Lately, whenever I try to unload my SBOS drivers using
  188. the SBOS -f option, it says:

  205. I've got some excellent 16-bit patches of TR-808 and 909 kicks and snares
  206. which I'd like to let you all have, but I have no FTP access to send them to
  207. EPAS. Would some kind soul take them in email and see that they get onto
  208. EPAS?

  211. probably as shareware, with 1/4 of the sounds in the shareware version. Stay

  241. the user to select config.sys/autoexec.bat pairs at bootup.  I have checked
  242. the archive at SIMTEL and found that there are a lot of programs like this
  243. and I had no idea of the merits and faults of each one and I didn't want
  244. to spend time DL'ing all that over my 2400 modem.  I was wondering if
  245. anyone out there is using such a utility and if anyone has any recommendations.

  267.     The one I use is called AUTOCON, and I *really* like it.  It
  268. lets you have any number of config/autoexec pairs, lets you either
  269. restart your computer at the command line with the name of one of the
  270. sets or lets you choose at boot time, you can tell it to let you use
  271. your own editor (a MUST for me; I can't do without emacs! :)...

  290. Sorry if this is a FAQ, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.
  291. I'm trying to run my Ultrasound from Master Tracks Pro4 along with my
  292. Korg Wavestation EX synth. I guess I was hoping for too much that a program
  293. change would load in an instrument to the card. Instead I loaded a MIDI file
  294. with the Windows Media Player which seemed to assign instruments to MIDI
  295. channels OK so that I could sequence them from MTPRO. These weren't the
  296. instruments I wanted however, and loading the ones I did want with the Patch
  297. manager doesn't seem to assign them to any specific MIDI channel. The only
  298. way around it that I can find so far (and it only works sometimes) is to
  299. send a program change for every track, record some trash on it, write a
  300. MIDI file, then load the instruments from the MIDI file with the Patch
  301. Manager.
  302. Anyone have any idea on this? Do I need a new sequencer or something? I would
  303. also like to be able to trigger samples from within a sequence too. That
  304. is, get my synth playing a soundtrack and have the soundcard playing .wavs in
  305. places. Anyone know of any software to do it (pref. windows).

  321. For those of you who have been having problems getting the gf166.com program
  322. loaded, I seem to have found a solution.  To recap the problem, the 
  323. ultramid.exe program loads fine, but when you try to load gf166.com, you
  324. get a message saying "Unable to install Sound Driver interrupt vector.  
  325. UltraMID TSR not detected."  Checking the interrupts using MSD or something
  326. similar, it reports that the UltraMID has taken over the Ultrasound interrupts.

  328. On our system at least, going into the motherboard BIOS and turning off the
  329. VIDEO ROM (C000,32k) shadowing has cleared up the problem.  This was the
  330. only segment of rom that we were shadowing.

  333. soundblaster irq 7, port address 220.

  352. As an aspiring multimedia addict, I just bought an internal Mitsumi CD-ROM
  353. for my Gateway 486/DX33.  I think that my tales of woe and joy might
  354. interest other GUSers.
  355.  
  356. My first attempt at achieving multimedia enlightenment was by
  357. purchasing an older Sony external CD that came with cables, speakers,
  358. and about 5 nifty CDs (Tempra Photo-CD, World Atlas, etc..)  I began
  359. to have my doubts when I saw that the interface card was 8-bit, and
  360. required DMA channel 1, 2, or 3.  I plugged the card in - powered up
  361. my machine for a quick check - nothing...  total system lock-up.
  362. After trying enough combinations of DMA/IRQ/base address switch
  363. settings to leave my fingers numb, I still had no joy (although the
  364. neighbors garage door opened on one setting, coincidence?)  Tried the
  365. usual rituals, removed all other cards - reset bus speed - drank bad
  366. beer - nothing worked.  I returned the Sony system.

  369. Second attempt - I trade the Sony in for the Mitsumi internal.  I'm
  370. not too crazy about this, as my Gateway is the mini-desktop model
  371. (baby-AT case), and only has one half-height bay to start with.  Bye,
  372. bye 5 1/4" drive.  Shockingly, removing the drive and installing the
  373. Mitsumi was relatively painless.  The Mitsumi interface is 16-bit, and
  374. allows you the option of DMA or non-DMA device drivers, just in case.
  375. Great Angels of Elvis, it works.

  378. I pop in Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 3 into the drive.  What's this?  No
  379. native GUS support?  What a shock.  Okay, load SBOS 2.08, dink around
  380. with the parameters, and... tada!  sbos -x2 allows me to get to the
  381. title screen.  Two seconds of music, and then silence...  next screen
  382. of game, two seconds of tunes, silence...  hmm....

  385. Remember that bit about the Mitsumi allowing DMA or non-DMA drivers?
  386. Just for yucks, I install the non-DMA driver, load up sbos -x2, and
  387. voila!  It works, but CD access is very borderline...

  390. Can anybody explain this?  My GUS isn't using DMA 5 - so it should be
  391. free for the CD to use.  Is there a problem with too much simultaneous
  392. DMA on a PC?  Why does the sound just drop out?

  396. wizard who can explain just what all the DMA channels are on a PC, how
  397. they work, how they are typically assigned, limitations of, and what
  398. states they are legal in?

  418. This is an old topic, but after reading through the old digests, I didn't
  419. get anywhere.  I have Ultima V Part 1 with The Forge of Virtue, and u7gus.zip.
  420. When I played the game with the initia drivers (unmodified) it worked with
  421. sbos 2b10 fine (no voice though).  I replaced the drivers with the ones in 
  422. u7gus.zip and no sound (and it wouldnt always run either...crashed on startup.
  423. I was hoping there was a way to run the ail drivers in the program, but havent found out what to replace with what if its possible.  The roland emulator is out
  424. because ultima7 will not allow you to run ems.  Does anyone have an answer to 
  425. this dilema?

  460. I agree that this is unfortunate, but Gravis has a fully legitimate excuse,
  461. at least for now: the GF1 synth chip that they use *cannot* address more than
  462. 1mb of RAM.... the good news? ICS has a GF2 on the way that (as of last I
  463. knew) supports up to 8mb, and I would think this might show up in a GUS down
  464. the way (purely speculation).
